"Black Friday" Express: Top U.S. home furnishings retailers are seeing huge customer traffic

The just-concluded American Thanksgiving "Black Friday" sales day is an exciting day for Target, Macy's or Kohl's.

Placer.ai, a customer traffic analysis company, made statistics on the customer traffic of different types of retail stores on Black Friday.

Compared with the average daily traffic in 2023, department store traffic increased by more than 300% on Black Friday. Among them, the traffic of Macy’s Macy’s department store and Kohl’s department store increased by 458% and 418% respectively.

The Black Friday passenger flow growth rate of large supermarkets is significantly different, and many hypermarkets have a lower growth rate than the same period in 2022. Target led the way with a 158% increase in customer traffic.

With the exception of Ross Dress for Less, the low-price discount chain retailers that participated in the statistics generally saw customer traffic increase by more than 100% on Black Friday. Nordstrom Rack performed the most eye-catchingly, with traffic increasing by 182% compared to the daily average. Moreover, the traffic volume of almost every Nordstrom Rack store has increased by more than 100%.

Among so-called dollar store and deep-discount chain retailers, traffic at Ollie's and Five Below grew 265% and 238%, respectively, above average, higher than other similar retailers.

Ethan Chernofsky, senior vice president of Placer.ai, said that department stores, large shopping malls and outlets generally saw a significant increase in customer traffic on Black Friday, which was higher than the same period last year. This year’s “Black Friday” situation once again shows that “Black Friday” is still the most important sales season for most retailers, especially under the current macroeconomic background, which also shows the importance of the shopping season.
